Our History
It is said that when a Momin moves to a new place, the first question he asks; do we have an Imambargah here? With the grace of God, Azadari is fed to us by our elders and it stays in our blood and is passed onto generation after generation. In 1980s, Momineen of Edmonton, mostly immigrants from India and Pakistan, quickly realized that the only Azadari available in Edmonton is either in English or Arabic. To satisfy their need of having Azadari in Urdu language, Momineen started arranging religious programs at their houses.In 1994, Br. Syed Ali (may Allah bless his soul) started holding Majalis and Milad programs at his residence in MillWoods Edmonton. Many well known speakers from subcontinent read Majalis at the Azakhana at his residence. This arrangement continued for more than a decade. Alberta’s strong economy attracted many Momin families to Edmonton and a time came when Br. Syed Ali Marhoom’s house was not big enough to accommodate the large number of mourners.
Our Journey
HCECA was registered as a charitable organization on Jun 13, 2008. This was a major step in our journey towards getting a place that we can call Hussainia. In 2009, we bought the existing land of acres and moved our programs to this new location. It was a humble beginning to mourn the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). There was always a desire to build a proper Hussainia building which can accommodate the growing population of Momineen in Edmonton and surrounding areas. In 2016, an application was submitted to the city council for rezoning of the area to build a new structure. Alhamdulillah, after many challenges, we have finally received approval from Edmonton City Council to build a new Hussaini Center.

A professional architect firm with extensive experience has been hired to design a new 2-story building with basement. The main level, that we propose is of approx. 9000 sqft with 2nd level of 5000 sqft and basement of 9000 sqft thus providing us a total of approximately 23000 sqft of constructed place. The process has started and land is being prepared for further development.
The Main level will comprise of a prayer hall for Gents and Ladies with capacity for 500-700 people on each side. There will be provisions to accommodate almost 1500 more people if required InshaAllah. Additionally, there will be a Maiyat Ghsul & cold storage room, 10 Sunday school classes, Library, Alim Room, washrooms and office space and a commercial kitchen.

Construction phase II has been completed and all utilities lines have been placed underground.
We have accomplished our goal for 2021 with the exception of construction of the access road which could not be possible due to lowering temperatures inshallah it will be completed by the end of May 2022.
